At some point, your vehicle will need new brakes. Over the years, various methods have emerged for replacing them. In this article, we’ll explore the different approaches to brake replacement and highlight the best practices for ensuring safety and performance.
1. Brake Pads Only – Pad Slap
The “pad slap” method involves simply replacing worn brake pads without addressing the brake caliper or rotor. We do not recommend this approach at Radical Mechanical. While it’s the most basic option, it often leads to issues such as brake shudder and squeaking noises after installation. This method fails to provide a comprehensive solution, leaving underlying problems unaddressed.
2. Brake Pads and Machined Rotors
This method has historically been a common practice, where brake pads are replaced alongside rotors that are machined to restore their surface. However, we’ve observed that this practice is becoming less frequent due to advancements in brake design. Often, rotors may be near or below specification, making them unsuitable for machining. Additionally, even when rotors are within specification, they can warp after machining due to metal fatigue caused by repeated heating and cooling over time.
3. Replacing Brake Pads and Rotors
We highly recommend this method as the most effective way to ensure safe braking every time you press the pedal. By replacing both the pads and rotors, along with servicing the calipers, we guarantee optimal performance. New rotors provide a stronger metal structure, resulting in longer-lasting braking efficiency. Furthermore, we offer a warranty on both pads and rotors, ensuring that if any issues arise, we will provide quick and efficient repairs.
