Should I Buy an EV?

As a dedicated car enthusiast, mechanic, and someone who races fire-breathing race cars, you might expect me to tell you to steer clear of electric vehicles (EVs). But if that’s what you’re hoping for, you may be disappointed.

In this blog, I won’t dive into the typical discussions about the environment, costs, or recent security concerns surrounding Chinese-built EVs. You can find those debates on the front page of any motoring section. Instead, let’s talk about practicality and whether an EV is the right fit for you.

I’m not suggesting that EVs should take over all other cars on Australian roads. However, they certainly have their place. Think of cars like tools—some are simply better suited for specific tasks. Sure, you could use a spanner to hammer in a nail, but we both know a hammer is the right tool for the job. Similarly, a diesel ute is perfect for towing and off-roading, while a Toyota Corolla is better for city driving.

Around Newcastle’s CBD and Cooks Hill, where my workshop is based, we see a wide variety of vehicles. But due to the compact layout of the city, many people opt to walk or bike instead of driving. On the flip side, we also have plenty of drivers racking up serious kilometers on the road.

So, when does an EV make sense?

EVs Are Ideal for:

  • Short, frequent trips: If most of your drives are within the city or just quick commutes, an EV excels at these.
  • Private carport or garage: Having a dedicated space to charge overnight makes EV ownership much more convenient.
  • Second car: If you already own a car for longer trips or heavy-duty tasks, an EV could be a great supplementary option for daily driving.

When an EV Might Not Be Right for You:

  • Frequent long trips: While charging networks are expanding, long road trips still pose challenges for EV owners.
  • Outdoor or street parking: Without easy access to charging at home, an EV can become a hassle.
  • Towing: EVs aren’t the best choice if you regularly tow trailers or boats.

By focusing on how EVs can fit into your lifestyle rather than sweeping generalizations, I hope this gives you a clearer picture. Whether you’re after efficiency for short trips or simply curious about the technology, an EV might be a worthwhile consideration.
