What you can count on

No catch. No pressure. No runaround.

Plenty of people walk into a rego check half expecting to hear their car needs a fortune spent on it. Here’s how it works with us instead.

01

The price is capped, and that’s what you pay.

The NSW Government sets the most a pink slip or blue slip can cost. Our prices are right here on the page, and nothing gets added at the counter.

02

A fail comes with a straight answer.

If something doesn’t pass, we tell you exactly what and why. We keep what’s needed to pass separate from anything that’s just worth knowing.

03

Get it fixed wherever you like.

Want us to fix it? We’ll give you the price first. Rather shop around? That’s fine. Bring it back within 14 days and the re-check costs nothing extra.

Prices

Pink or blue? Here’s the price.

Most people need a pink slip. A blue slip is for cars that aren’t on NSW rego yet, or have been off it for a while.

Finding a mechanic you can genuinely trust is rare. I found one at Radical Mechanical. I recently took my car for a blue slip and some mechanical work, from the moment I walked through the door, I was treated with respect and real care… Lawrence out the front kept me informed every step of the way, so I never had to wonder where things stood.

Very friendly and great prices. Haven’t had any bad experiences. Last year they even squeezed me in the same day, when I realised I needed a pink slip and it was the day it was before it was due.. Much appreciated.

These guys are amazing! After coming in for a rego check and my car unfortunately failing, they managed to squeeze me in during peak Christmas time to sort out these problems for me, finished it within 24 hours!!!…

If it doesn’t pass

A fail isn’t a disaster.

Plenty of cars need a small fix to pass. Here’s what happens next, and none of it happens without your yes.

You’ll know exactly what failedWe show you what it is and why it’s on the Transport for NSW list, in plain English.

Needed to pass, or just worth knowingWe keep the two apart, so you know what has to be fixed now and what can wait.

Spread the costIf a fix turns up, Afterpay, Humm and Zip are all welcome at the counter.

How it works

Book it, drop it, renew it.

  1. Book online, any time

Pick a day, tick Registration inspection, and put pink or blue in the details box. Our manager confirms your slot.

  2. Drop it in at 8am

Hand over the keys, then grab a coffee on Darby St or head off to work.

  3. Pass or fail, we call you

A pass is sent through to Transport for NSW electronically. If something fails, we explain it and you decide.

  4. Renew your rego

Pink slip: renew online with Service NSW. Blue slip: take it into a Service NSW centre to register.

Who you’re booking with

Not your average mechanics.

Radical started in 2016 with Cody McKay, a toolbox and the back of his Holden Crewman, going to people who couldn’t get to a mechanic during work hours.

Ten years on it’s a four-hoist workshop on Darby St, and the idea hasn’t changed: fair prices, straight answers, and someone who’ll come out of the workshop to explain it. That goes double when a car doesn’t pass.

We look after cars from right across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, including Merewether, The Junction, Hamilton, Adamstown, Lambton and Charlestown.

Questions

Good questions, straight answers.

Do I need a pink slip or a blue slip?

A pink slip if your car is on NSW rego, it’s more than five years old and rego is coming up. Your renewal notice will say if you need one. A blue slip if the rego ran out more than three months ago, or the car’s come from interstate or overseas.

Will you fail my car so I have to pay for repairs?

No. A pink slip is a set checklist from Transport for NSW, and the car either meets it or it doesn’t. If something fails, we show you what and why. Whether we fix it is up to you, and you can bring it back within 14 days for the re-check at no extra cost.

My rego’s due tomorrow. Can you fit me in?

Online bookings start from the next day, so pick the earliest day on the booking form. If that’s too late, give us a ring on (02) 4606 2929 and we’ll fit you in where we can.

How long does a pink slip last?

Six months, so there’s no need to get it done ages ahead. Renew your rego inside that window. A blue slip lasts 42 days.

My rego ran out more than three months ago. What now?

You’ll need a blue slip, and new number plates from Service NSW. An unregistered car can’t just be driven in, so check with Service NSW about an unregistered vehicle permit for the trip, or bring it on a trailer.

Can I get a service done at the same time?

Yes. Tick Service and Registration inspection on the booking form and our manager will book them in together.
